The covid-19 treatment guidelines considered plasma therapy to be one of the effective lines of treatment when a person was in a severe condition of Covid-19. So we started our research on plasma therapy and thought to bring it to Vizag as soon as possible as there were many deaths with every passing day. We also thought to bring plasma therapy to everyone in need without differences like rich or poor. We were inspired by the Delhi model of operations for creating a plasma bank. Whoever wanted to donate plasma could donate voluntarily, just like blood donations, for every request raised, a quick disbursement of plasma unit for the recipient was done.
Our main motives were :
To identify a blood bank and convert it as a plasma bank to respond quickly to every request raised.
To curtail the rising black market.
Never connect donor or recipient.
To motivate people on voluntarily plasma donations.
Total 500+ calls received, 112+ requests fulfilled, 73+ patients alive.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, especially in the second wave, hospitals and families were desperately searching for treatment options that could help critically ill patients. At that time, plasma therapy was considered one of the recommended treatment approaches for patients suffering from severe COVID-19 complications. As the number of cases and fatalities increased each day, Vizag Volunteers recognized the urgent need to create a systematic and accessible plasma support network for the people of Visakhapatnam.
Inspired by successful plasma support models implemented in other parts of the country, particularly the Delhi Plasma Bank model, Vizag Volunteers began researching plasma therapy and exploring ways to make this life-saving resource available to everyone in need. The team believed that access to plasma support should never depend on a person's financial status and that every patient deserved an equal opportunity to receive timely assistance.
With this vision, the Plasma Bank Initiative was launched to create an organized and efficient system that could connect plasma donors with patients while maintaining privacy, transparency, and ethical practices. The initiative encouraged recovered COVID-19 patients to voluntarily donate plasma, much like blood donation, so that it could be used to help those fighting severe infections.
As awareness spread, Vizag Volunteers received an overwhelming response from the community. The team handled more than 500 calls from patients and families seeking assistance. Through continuous coordination, donor outreach, verification processes, and collaboration with healthcare institutions, the organization successfully fulfilled over 112 plasma requests.
Most importantly, the initiative contributed to saving more than 73 lives, providing hope to families during one of the most difficult periods of the pandemic. Behind every fulfilled request was a dedicated effort by volunteers who worked tirelessly to identify donors, coordinate logistics, communicate with hospitals, and ensure that plasma reached patients as quickly as possible.
Through initiatives like the Plasma Bank Project, Vizag Volunteers reaffirmed their commitment to serving humanity, proving that when a community comes together with compassion and purpose, it can make a profound difference in the lives of others. π©Έππ€
