  • Summary:

Our mission at Vizag Volunteers was to provide free and quality health care to everyone. During the second wave, when there was alot of confusion about mutations & variants, Vizag Volunteers conducted zoom meetings with the public and took their opinions. We expanded our team by providing doctor consultations with senior doctors from India, the US, the UK, and Australia. Our volunteers' team managed the patients and monitored them daily.

In the 2nd wave, We came up in a very planned manner and extended our doctor consultation service to 24X7 as a national helpline number. A person can call on the number and speak to our volunteer, who takes down details and connects to the available doctor. But if someone calls up with serious symptoms, we recommend they get hospitalized. We received around 60-90 calls daily, started a whatsapp feature, and handled the doctor consultation requests raised on our website.

With a team of 6 doctors, four nurses, and ten volunteers, we actively managed the requests, and based on their age, comorbidities & case severity; we pushed the requests to doctors to support on priority. We also conducted regular online breathing exercise sessions, provided medicines for patients who cannot afford to purchase. We also offered a non-ICU level of hospital care by a dedicated Nursing staff with our senior doctor's telemedicine guidance based on their availability to ensure the progress and track of the patient's health status. We also follow up the Patient diet during the isolation period. For proper guidance regarding the diet and respiratory issues, dietician & Physiotherapy consultations are included in our covid consultation support. In the second wave, we treated more than 580+ patients at home.

In the 2nd wave, the variant was stronger than the 1st wave, so we regularly followed ICMR & AIIMS guidelines updates to monitor the patient's health and diet based on expert doctor's suggestions. Our Vizag Volunteers doctor consultation team identified few best covid hospitals within the budget and suggested to patients who require a hospital bed and coordinated with Vizag Volunteers oxygen bank team to provide cylinder/concentrator at home based upon their requirement. In addition, we collaborate with NRI Doc, SSAF, Varamu Charitable trust to run the ARK (Arogya Raksha Kavach) program, a comprehensive covid care program with a team of doctors from India, the USA, Australia, and the UK.

How We Executed

Based on 1st wave experience, Our team at Vizag Volunteers analyzed three critical barriers for an average person to attain healthcare:
1. Geographical distance, where the facilities were too far.
2. Financial gaps, good healthcare is expensive.
3. Lack of critical resources, like well-trained health workers, drugs, and diagnostic centers.
We aimed to reduce each of these barriers and improve healthcare through a comprehensive technology-enabled intervention.
